Boulay Surpasses 1,000 Career Assists on First Day of Maroon Classic

Tornados Notch First Victory of 2025

SALEM, VA. – The Brevard College volleyball team (1-5) picked up its first win so far in the 2025 campaign with a 3-1 triumph over Hollins University (3-2) on Friday in the first day of the Maroon Classic, hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.

BC's first victory in the early stages of the 2025 campaign was followed by a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Carolina University (1-1), as the Bruins overcame a first-set victory by the Tornados to win three-straight frames.

Izzy Boulay, a sophomore setter from Newnan, Georgia, eclipsed the 1,000-assist mark for her collegiate career in the first match of the day. The second-year Tornado becomes the seventh player in the NCAA era to surpass 1,000 assists for a career.

BREVARD 3, HOLLINS 1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-19)

Hollins took the opening point of the match, and did not look back from there in set number one, withstanding several Tornado runs to take the first set by five points, 25-20. HU was able to go the entire frame without surrendering the lead to Brevard, and closed the set out with a 10-6 run.

Brevard started the second set on fire, scoring 14 of the first 19 points capped by a Caroline Moon kill. Hollins trimmed the deficit to five at 15-10, but a 10-6 rally of Brevard's own closed the door on the frame, as the Tornados tied the match up at one set apiece.

BC fell behind by as many as five, 15-10, in set number three, but began to crawl back, trimming the deficit down to one with a 5-1 spurt capped by an Abigail Kelly service ace. With the Tornados trailing by four points late at 22-18, Brevard stormed back with seven-unanswered points on the backs of kills by Boulay, Kirklyn Hudler, Kelly, and Moon. Brevard entered set number four with a 2-1 match lead.

The Tornados opened up an early 7-4 lead in set number four, and won the races to 10 (10-9) and 20 (20-14), putting themselves five points from victory. With the score 22-14 in favor of Brevard, Hollins rallied for four-straight points to cut the Tornado lead to four. BC scored three of the next four on two Kelly kills and a game-winning spike by Elise McIntosh off a feed by Boulay to seal Brevard's first win of the young 2025 campaign.

Boulay facilitated the offense with 36 assists, while Kelly (13 kills), Malahna Hoyle (12 kills), and Moon (11 kills) led the attack. Moon had a team-best 18 digs to complete the double-double, and Kelly followed suit with 16 digs of her own. Lili White recorded 17 digs on the defensive end, and contributed offensively with six assists and five service aces. Kelly served up a game-high six service aces as well.

CAROLINA U 3, BREVARD 1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15)

The Tornados and Bruins battled through a highly-competitive matchup in the nightcap. Brevard fell behind by four points early in set one, but utilized a critical 9-0 scoring run to open up a 16-11 edge. Brevard was able to hold on to the lead from that point forward, withstanding several efforts by the Bruins. A CU attack error clinched a two-point set victory for the Tornados.

Carolina U was able to find a way to answer, however, grinding out a pair of tough-fought set wins by a combined five points in sets two and three. CU held on in the tightly-contested middle frames before cruising by 10 in the fourth to secure the victory.

Brevard was paced by Moon, who tallied 13 kills and 15 digs for another double-double. Hoyle also reached double figures with 10 kills while Kelly added nine kills and 17 digs. Boulay dished 32 assists out, with Moon (15 digs) and White (11 digs) pacing BC's defense.

Karli Totel led the Bruins (1-1) with 15 kills and 17 digs, while Kammie Naude added 11 kills and four service aces, hitting .588 for the match. Setter Syvannah Poore directed the offense with 42 assists and chipped in nine digs.

The Tornados conclude action at the Maroon Classic on Saturday, facing host Roanoke at 10 a.m. ahead of a 2 p.m. scheduled first serve against Randolph College.
