Brevard Slugs Past Toccoa Falls in Midweek Shootout

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (10-5) scored double-digit runs for the eighth time this season with a 17-7 triumph over Toccoa Falls (13-9-1) in eight innings on Tuesday at Gil Coan Field.

Brevard used three massive offensive innings in the second, fourth, and eighth to take the victory over the Screaming Eagles.

Junior shortstop Nicole Bartolotti led the way for the offensive explosion, going 4-for-6 with 4 RBI, a double, and a run scored. Senior designated hitter Gavin McCoy launched his first career home run, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, joined with two hits apiece by Bryson Genwright, Gavin Grant, Moe Love Jr., and Logan Sawyer. A grand total of eight Tornados tallied hits, with six tallying multiple base hits.

Jonathan Germany (2-0), Jonah Campbell, Barger Shook, Grayson Ledford, and Nathan Woytowich all combined to work on the mound for the Tornados in the midweek matchup, with Shook making his collegiate debut and recording his first strikeout.

Toccoa Falls took the early advantage with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Tornados responded with a massive seven-run second. Kacey Shanks and Genwright drew bases-loaded walks before a two-RBI single by Love Jr. put the Tornados in front, 4-2. Grant brought Genwright in with a sacrifice fly before Bartolotti plated Love Jr. with his RBI double. McCoy capped the frame off with an RBI single.

Both sides scored a run in the third inning, and Toccoa Falls trimmed the deficit to three with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. McCoy launched his first collegiate homer in the bottom of the frame, kickstarting a five-run inning for the Tornados who extended their lead out to an eight-run margin, 13-5.

The Screaming Eagles made a late push with two runs in the top of the sixth, cutting the Tornado lead to six, but Brevard finished off the win with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Following a wild pitch and Grant's two-RBI single, Bartolotti poked a single through the right side for the run-rule walk-off, as BC wrapped up the win, 17-7.

The Tornados begin USA South Conference play this weekend with a trip to Grottoes, Va. to face Mary Baldwin. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., and concludes on Sunday at noon.
