GROTTOES, Va. - The Brevard College baseball team (12-5, 2-0 USA South) used a late comeback in game one and held off Mary Baldwin (2-12, 0-3 USAS) in game two to sweep the first USA South Conference doubleheader of 2026 on Saturday.
Trailing by two runs entering the top of the ninth, BC scored four to take a two-run lead and held the Fighting Squirrels off the scoreboard to claim the 11-9 win. Brevard then used a five-run seventh in game two to secure a 10-7 triumph in the backend of the doubleheader.Â
GAME ONE: BREVARD 11, MARY BALDWIN 9
Both sides scored a run in the first frame, with Davis Anders driving in Nico Bartolotti for BC's first run of the day. Brevard then scored four in the second and two in the third to hold an early six-run advantage.Â
Mary Baldwin put together a surge of offense in the middle innings, scoring a run in the bottom of the third before flipping the script in the bottom of the fifth with six runs, taking the lead 8-7. MBU tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth before the stellar Tornado comeback.Â
Bryson Genwright drew a leadoff walk before Andrew Bernard's pinch-hit single forced a pitching change. Moe Love Jr. was hit by a pitch to load the bases up for Bartolotti, who ripped a two-RBI double to left field that tied the game. Anders then followed suit with a go-ahead two-RBI single, putting the Nados up by two.Â
MBU managed to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Kalen Milstead and the Tornado defense got the job done, forcing a game-clinching fly ball to right that secured the conference victory.Â
Bartolotti and Logan Sawyer each went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Brevard offense, with Anders and Tyson Hinkle also recording multiple hits in the win. As a whole, Brevard slugged six extra-base hits.Â
Milstead came on in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning, securing the win with four and two-thirds innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts.Â
GAME TWO: BREVARD 10, MARY BALDWIN 7
Brevard scored the first two runs of game two, as Anders brought in Gavin Grant on a sacrifice fly, followed by a Hinkle RBI single that sent Bartolotti across. MBU answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, and a two-run homer in the second gave the hosts a 4-2 edge.Â
Kacey Shanks drilled an RBI double in the top of the third, and Logan Sawyer's solo shot in the top of the fifth tied the game up.Â
BC put together a pivotal top of the seventh where it scored five runs to open up a 9-4 lead. Anders kicked things off with a two-run homer, followed by Genwright's two-RBI triple, and capped with Love Jr.'s RBI double.Â
MBU put a late rally together in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the deficit to two with a three-run inning. Love Jr. came through with an insurance run for BC in the top of the ninth with an RBI single that scored Hinkle, and Colin Weathers shut the door in the top of the ninth to secure the doubleheader sweep.Â
Andy Fahringer tossed two scoreless innings to secure his second win of the season, and Brevard's offense accumulated double-digit hits once again, as five Tornados had multiple base knocks. BC totaled six extra-base hits in game number two as well.Â
The series finale is set for noon on Sunday.Â
