BREVARD, N.C. – Senior attacker
Xan Hill eclipsed the 200 career point mark, becoming just the second Brevard College women's lacrosse student-athlete to accomplish the feat, but the Tornados (2-5, 1-2 USA South) fell late to Huntingdon (2-6, 1-3 USAS), 11-9 on Saturday at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Hill, a fourth-year Tornado from Fort Mill, South Carolina, joins
Emily Denaga (2022-25, 257 points) as the only two BC women's lacrosse players in school history to surpass 200 points in their collegiate careers.
BC saw four goals and two assists from
Xan Hill and three strikes from
Arianna Casertano, but Huntingdon used a decisive third quarter and timely late goals to hold off the Tornados.
The Tornados struck first, as
Madi Norris opened the scoring off a feed from Hill just 40 seconds into the contest. Hill added a free-position goal minutes later to give Brevard a 2-0 advantage.
Huntingdon answered with a 4-0 run to close the first quarter, taking a 4-3 lead despite a late unassisted goal from Casertano.
The teams traded goals throughout the second quarter, with Hill scoring twice on free-position opportunities and Casertano adding another off a Norris dish. Brevard pulled within one at 7-6 heading into halftime after Hill's power play goal with under a minute remaining.
Huntingdon seized control in the third quarter, outscoring Brevard 2-0 while holding the Tornados to just two shots in the period. Molly Turnan and Amara Veng each found the net as the visitors extended the lead to 9-6.
The Hawks pushed the advantage to 10-6 early in the fourth quarter on a man-up goal from Reagan Barrett, who led all Hawks with four goals and two assists.
Brevard responded with a late surge. Casertano scored off an assist from Hill, and Norris added a power play goal to cut the deficit to 10-8 with 3:30 remaining.
After Barrett completed her fourth goal of the game to restore a three-goal cushion, Hill answered with her fourth goal in the final minute. Brevard had a chance to draw closer in the closing seconds, but BC's final attempt went off the cross bar.
Hill finished with six points (four goals, two assists) and a game-high nine draw controls, while Norris added two goals and an assist. Casertano totaled three goals on eight shots.
Kyla Smith-Fondall made nine saves in goal for Brevard.
Huntingdon was led by Barrett's four goals and Turnan's three, while Veng contributed two goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Kendall Hallas recorded eight saves in the win.
BC is back in action on Tuesday, March 24, visiting Demorest, Ga. to take on Piedmont at 5 p.m.
