Smith Slugs Pair of Home Runs

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Brevard College softball team (3-3) dropped a pair of contests, 17-6 and 10-5, to Maryville (9-3) on Wednesday in non-conference action.

The Scots were able to run-rule the Tornados in five innings in game one, and established an early lead in the second contest. Brevard battled back from a five-run deficit, cutting the lead to just one after the top of the fifth. Maryville was able to close the door with four runs, taking the second game 10-5.

GAME ONE: MARYVILLE 17, BREVARD 6 (5 INNINGS)

The hosts kicked things off with an offensive explosion, scoring 14 runs through the first three innings of action. Addison Smith drilled a two-run homer in the top of the fourth, followed by Andrea Furr's sacrifice fly as BC scored three in the frame.

Maryville tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, while BC added three runs of its own in the top of the fifth with a two-RBI double by Regan Winkler and a sacrifice fly by Hayden Moody

Winkler went 2-for-3 at the dish with two RBI, two runs scored, and a double. Making the start in right field, Addie MacDougall scored a run and tallied a triple.

GAME TWO: MARYVILLE 10, BREVARD 5

Maryville once again started hot, scoring six runs in the second inning to take the early advantage. Smith drilled her second home run of the day to get the Tornados on the board in the top of the third before an Emma Payne sacrifice fly and a Smith RBI single cut the Maryville lead to three runs, 6-3.

Brevard drew two RBI in the top of the fifth after Rylee Locklear and Kali Panaccione were each hit by pitches with the bases loaded, bringing the Tornados within one. Maryville found a response with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and a score in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the doubleheader sweep with a 10-5 game-two win.

Smith and Peyton Wise each tallied a pair of hits in game two, while Alyssa Boris recorded a double.

The Tornados are back in action this weekend, traveling to Macon, Ga. for a neutral site matchup against Berea on Saturday, followed by three games against Wesleyan with one on Saturday and two on Sunday.
