BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College volleyball team (1-0) cruised to a comfortable 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-13, 25-21) over local foe Warren Wilson (0-1) on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.
A balanced attack featuring returners and new faces propelled the Tornados to the season-opening sweep of the Owls.
Caroline Moon led the offensive charge with 10 kills, while freshman middle blocker
Bailey Blackmon impressed in her collegiate debut with eight kills, a .800 hitting percentage, and three blocks.
Emma Fontana added six kills and a pair of serving aces on the offensive end, while first-year Tornado
Rowan Raney led the defense with 16
digs.
Izzy Boulay (17 assists) and
Madison Warren (12 assists) distributed numerous scoring chances for the Tornados.
Akeela Cunningham (10 kills) and Pandora Keele (nine kills) paced the attack for the Owls, highlighted by Cunningham's double-double with 11 digs.
The first set started back-and-forth before the Tornados scored six consecutive points to pull away, 22-15. A Fontana kill capped off an eight-point triumph for BC.
Brevard jumped on top early in the second stanza, scoring seven of the first nine points and holding a nine-point lead, 13-4, midway through. The Owls pulled to within four, 17-13, before BC went on an 8-0 scoring run featuring a pair of Fontana service aces as the Tornados held a 2-0 match lead.
BC scored the first seven points, held leads of 10-2, 14-4, and 15-5 in the third set of action. The Owls were able to cut the deficit to three points, 23-20, but the Tornados used kills from
Katelyn McCurry and
Madison Warren to cap off the sweep.
Thirteen different Tornados saw action on Tuesday, with Blackmon,
Elly McClough,
Ariel Rieck, and Rowan all making their collegiate debuts.
BC heads to Berea this weekend to take part in the Berea Mountaineer Classic. The Tornados first face Berea on Friday at 7 p.m. before matches with Spalding (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.) and Maryville (Saturday, 1 p.m.).
