ATLANTA - The Brevard College men's soccer team (1-1) battled fiercely with number-four Emory (3-0), as the Eagles outlasted a late Tornado push to claim a 2-1 victory in the final match of the Sonny Carter Invitational at the Woodruff P.E. Center Stadium.
BC withstood Emory's early attack, as the Eagles found the back of the net twice inside the first 20 minutes, with both scores coming 2:02 apart from each other. The Tornados regrouped at the half, and came out in sync in the second 45.
In the 54th minute, German Garcia scored his first goal of 2026 off a free kick opportunity, trimming the deficit to a one-goal margin, 2-1. Following Garcia's strike, the Tornados kept applying pressure, shooting four more times including an on-target look from Guilherme Barcelos. The Eagle defense was able to deny the Tornados the equalizer as the hosts clung to the one-goal edge.
Soren Deweer (1-1) made his second start with the Tornados, stopping four of Emory's chances on-target. The Tornado attack took 12 shots, with four being on-frame, while the Eagles fired 17 attempts off and won 11 corner kick opportunities.
For their efforts on the weekend, four Tornados - Roi Abutbul, Deweer, Nima Doucoure, and Garcia - were all named to the Sonny Carter All-Tournament Team.
Brevard will now gear up for another early-season tournament opportunity at the 37th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic, hosted in Danville, Kentucky by Centre College. The Tornados first face Spalding next Friday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Centre on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2:15 p.m.
