ATLANTA - The Brevard College men's soccer team (1-0) held off Oglethorpe (1-1), 2-1 in the opening day of the Sonny Carter Invitational on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta.
Guilherme Barcelos scored the game-winner for his first strike as a Tornado, while Solen Deweer made six saves to keep the Stormy Petrels from tying the contest.
In the 34th minute, an own goal went the Tornados' way, and Brevard held on to its one-goal edge until the halftime intermission.
BC outshot Oglethorpe 5-3 in the first stanza, and saved both of OU's shots on target.
Barcelos found the back of the net in the 60th minute of action to double Brevard's lead. Oglethorpe split the deficit in half in the 76th minute, but Brevard's defense held strong to clinch the victory in the season opener.
BC now gears up to face No. 4 Emory on Sunday at 6 p.m.
