Tornados Suffer Loss to Lenoir-Rhyne, 1-0

BREVARD, N.C.- In a match that saw 31 shots combined, the Brevard College men's soccer team was blanked by Lenoir-Rhyne, 1-0, in a South Atlantic Conference match Wednesday afternoon at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.

The Bears (9-7-1, 4-5-1 SAC) notched consecutive 1-0 wins while boosting their playoff positioning while the Tornados (5-10, 3-7 SAC) dropped their first home match since Oct. 5. With the loss, BC is mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.

Both teams were firing shots early and often while they combined for 16 in the first 45 minutes, but the match was scoreless at the half.

Freshman Daniel Wheldon missed a gorgeous blast from 30 yards out by a matter of inches early in the second half.

L-R's Zach Carles headed in a shot off of Josh Alderson in the 81st minute to break a scoreless tie. Despite a late push by BC, the Bears made the goal stand.

Both goalies were put to the test while BC's Heath Turner earned six saves while L-R's Stefan Dill stopped four shots.

The Bears Ben Jones led both squads with 11 shots, while four landed on target. Freshman Ryan McPhillips paced the Tornados team with four shots while freshman teammates Winston Haddock and Wheldon each tallied two.

BC honored seniors Jami Uuttu, Pauli Jussila, Adam Martin, Paulo Silva and former player Jake Parker prior to the match.

The Tornados wrap-up their 2013 season when they travel to Coker for a SAC match Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in Hartsville, S.C.
