Eagles defeat Tornados in close matches, 5-4

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College men's tennis team fell short of its first conference win of the season, falling to the Eagles of Carson-Newman, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon during South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play at the BC Tennis Complex.

The Tornados fall to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the SAC while Carson Newman picked up its first win of the season and are now 1-3 and 1-1.

David Taggart was impressive in his match in the No. 1 singles slot, defeating his opponent, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) while Nathan Sabate defeated Stefan Daza at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Taggert and Rory Northam picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles against Stefano Daza and Jordan Knott while George Finch and Sabate downed Kevin Mendes and Juan Sebastian Perez at No. 2 doubles, 8-5.

Northam lost a close match at No. 4 singles, falling 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to Austin Mackey while Finch lost at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Christoph Plasa was defeated at No. 5 singles by Mendes while Richie Liell lost by default in the No. 6 singles slot.

Joao Pedro Oliveria and Mackay defeated Plasa and Liell at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.

The Tornados will look to get back on the winning end after dropping their third straight match, all in SAC play, when they host Anderson on Tuesday. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
