GAFFNEY, S.C. - Brevard fell in its first two contests of the 2016 softball season on Saturday afternoon at Limestone, with the Saints winning a five-inning contest 9-0 before a tight 4-3 affair in the afternoon's second game.
A three-run sixth inning in Game Two put the Tornados (0-2) squarely in contention for a victory. Brevard took advantage of an error when Kinny Davis scored on Peyton Bailey's RBI single to cut Limestone's (2-0) lead to 4-1. Moments later, Kinsey Parrish blasted a two-run shot to left field to put the Tornados within a run.
Jamie Hrobak held the Saints scoreless in the bottom of the frame, inducing a popout double play to end the inning after allowing a one-out walk. Brevard put the tying run aboard on a Ricki Kuhn single up the middle, but Limestone pitcher Courtney Smith ended the threat with a popup to the first baseman to hand Brevard its second loss of the day.
The Saints got on the board in the second inning with an RBI single, then added an unearned run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to build their lead. Klinnin Carson earned the win by allowing two runs, one of them unearned, on four hits in five innings in the circle.
Brevard's Kuhn was saddled with the loss in Game Two after Hrobak took the loss in the first game. The two pitchers shared the load nearly evenly in the twinbill, with Hrobak logging 5.1 innings to Kuhn's 5.0.
The Tornados loaded the bases in the first inning of Game One on an infield single, a sacrifice fly, and two walks, but were unable to score when the inning ended on a strikeout. Limestone left two runners on in the first inning but notched four runs in the second.
The Saints added to their lead with three runs in the fourth then added a pair in the fifth. Pitcher Josie Weber retired the final seven Tornados she faced in earning the victory, giving up just three hits in her 5.0 innings of work.
Brevard's home opener comes on Thursday, Feb. 11 as the Tornados host Montreat. First pitched is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
