Bowman, Boone Grab Wins Over Pfeiffer

BREVARD, N.C. – Tom Mittring emerged with the lone win for the Brevard men's team, downing Bjorn Barwinski by scores of 6-4, 6-0. Pfeiffer completed victories in the next five singles matches as Thomas Hubble, David Weir, Raul Ruiz, Trey Speight and Kevin Garcia posted wins. Weir's 3-0 win came over Will Christiansen, who was forced to retire due to a thigh injury.

In men's doubles play the tandem of Mittring and Tim Hengst were edged by Hubble and Ruiz by an 8-5 margin. The duo of Christiansen and Bumgarner were downed by Barwinski and Weir, 8-1. Jaume Reig and Florian Peyssonneaux endured a hard fought battle with Speight and Garcia before falling 8-6.

Mekenzie Bowman notched the first win of her collegiate career and Carmen Boone posted her first win of the season in a clash with Pfeiffer on Friday afternoon.

Bowman, competing in the fourth match of her Tornado career, downed Madison Furr by scores of 6-2, 7-6 in a clash of the No. 4 seeded singles. Boone, who followed in the steps of her teammate, posted a 6-7, 6-2, 11-9 victory over the Falcons' Maddie Hatley. Boone's win came in dramatic fashion as she rallied from a 9-8 deficit in the tiebreaker to complete the victory.

The Tornados also grabbed a doubles victory from the tandem of Boone and Hannah Spear, who took care of the duo of Hatley and Furr by a score of 9-7. The doubles team of Kelsey Kushner/ Jen Cox surrendered two match points to Juliana Batah / Ally Delaney, who rallied to earn a 9-8 win. Bowman, who teamed with Margaret Correll in doubles play, suffered a setback to Pfeiffer's Anna Branson / Sydney Honeycutt by an 8-1 margin.

Batah battled back from an opening set loss to Kushner in No. 1 singles play to come away with a 5-7, 6-1, 10-5 win. Branson and Delaney posted two-set wins in both No. 2 and No. 3 singles action, while Honeycutt faced a battle with Abby Strater before emerging 3-6, 6-2, 10-1.

 

The Tornados return to the court on Feb. 19 when the men's unit hosts Spartanburg Methodist at 1 p.m.
