Box Score 2 FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Brevard College men's tennis team opened the 2024-25 season up on Sunday and Monday, September 8-9 at the ITA-sanctioned Monarch Men's Fall Invitational, hosted by Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Several Tornados earned their first collegiate singles and doubles victories, as BC took seven singles wins on Sunday coupled with five doubles victories on Monday.
On Sunday,
Ayden Montero, a freshman from Mandeville, Louisiana, collected his first college singles win with a victory over Bruno Gehlhaar of Montreat College in a three-set battle 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-7). Next up,
Nathan Bookout, a freshman from Cherryville, North Carolina, earned his first collegiate win and first of two singles victories on the day with a 6-0, 6-2 result over Zack Hawkins of Belmont Abbey College. Bookout went on to defeat Brady Mendler of host Methodist in a three-set thriller 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).
Garret Cardwell, a native of Statesville, North Carolina, made it three Tornado freshmen to win their first collegiate singles matches, defeating William Johnston of Methodist handidly, 6-2, 6-1. Cardwell went on to drop Turner Johnson of Guilford College in three set, claiming the first set 7-5 but falling 4-6 in set number two, setting up a thriller of a third set tiebreaker. The first-year Tornado earned an 11-9 win in the match decider to earn his second win of the day.
Returners
David Hoyle and
Brian Seon wrapped up the wins on day one for the Tornados, as Hoyle dropped Charles Talton of Guilford 7-5, 6-0, while Seon cruised over Zack Hawkins of Belmont Abbey 6-2, 6-0. The Tornados competed in a total of 20 singles matches on Sunday.
Monday was doubles day for the tournament, with senior
Bryce Bernitt pairing up with Moreno for a 6-0 win over Guilford's Emmanuel Oye and Henry Austin for the first Tornado win of the day.
Caelan Byrd, a freshman from Athens, Georgia, collected his first collegiate win in BC's second doubles victory of the day, teaming with
Ethan McGee to drop Will Phillips and Brady Mendler of Methodist, 6-4.
Cardwell and Hoyle paired up to defeat Royce South and William Johnston of Methodist with a 6-0 sweep. Bookout and Seon earned BC's fourth doubles win of the day, defeating teammates Cardwell and Hoyle 6-0. The pairing of Bookout and Seon went on to defeat Johnston and South of Methodist by a final of 6-4, rounding out the doubles play for Brevard. Seon was the line singles winner for the Tornados on Monday, dropping Johnston of Methodist 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.
Brevard returns to action with another individual tournament, this time at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee on Friday and Saturday, September 20-21.
