Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. - After falling behind 1-0 at the conclusion of doubles play, the Brevard College men's tennis team (10-5, 3-3 USA South) rallied with four singles victories and clinched the match over Southern Virginia University (6-7, 2-4 USAS), 4-3, secured by a three-set triumph by freshman
Nathan Bookout at the number-five spot on Saturday.
With the victory, Brevard is now set to rematch fifth-seeded SVU on Monday, April 21 at the McCoy Tennis Complex, with the first-round contest beginning at 11 a.m.
Saturday's team victory also served as the 10th of 2024-25 for the Tornados, marking the first time BC men's tennis has reached double-digit wins in a single season since 2010-11 (14 wins).
In doubles play, Brevard's top duo of
Bryce Bernitt and
Hayden LeBlanc secured a 6-2 win at the top flight, however, SVU answered with wins at the number two and three spots to earn the doubles point.
LeBlanc (no. 1) and Bernitt (no. 2) won three-set thrillers at the top two spots in singles, but the Knights responded with a three-set victory of their own at the number-three spot and a straight-set sweep at the four-line.
Ethan McGee, a senior from Salisbury, North Carolina, clinched another crucial point for the Nados with a 6-4, 6-4 win in number-six singles action. The overall match win, and a home playoff contest, rested on the shoulders of Bookout - a first-year Tornado from Cherryville, North Carolina.
Bookout cruised in the first set, 6-1, but dropped a narrow second-set result 6-4, sending the match to a deciding third set. The two sides played to a 6-6 draw, leaving the contest up to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Bookout dominated 7-2, giving the Tornados a home postseason match for the second-consecutive season.
