ROCK HILL, S.C.- The Brevard College men's soccer team was unable to overcome an early offensive attack and dropped a 6-0 decision in a midweek nonconference match against Winthrop at Eagle Field in Rock Hill, S.C. Thursday evening.
Winthrop (5-0-1) remains unbeaten on the season and netted a season-high six goals while BC (2-3-0) dropped its second consecutive road decision this week and managed only two shots on the evening.
The Eagles scored early and often, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the match. Adam Brundle put Winthrop on the board in the fourth minute when he bested BC goalkeeper Heath Turner on a penalty kick. The Eagles' Josh Choice earned his first of two assists in the sixth minute when he found Achille Obougou on a through ball. Obougou ended up one-on-one with Turner and chipped over the Tornado's netminder to make it a 2-0 match.
In the eighth minute, Winthrop tacked onto its lead when Patrick Barnes buried a shot into the bottom left corner to give. In the 10th minute, the Eagles' Max Hasenstab extended Winthrop's lead to four when he netted a goal on a through ball.
Winthrop tacked a pair of late goals in the 69th and 85th minute to make it a 6-0 match.
BC's Turner finished the evening with five saves while Juan Mascaro Jr. made his season debut and earned a save as well. The Eagles outshot the Tornados, 21-2, and held the corner kick advantage, 6-4.
The Tornados return to action Saturday when they open up South Atlantic Conference play against Queens at 4:30 p.m. at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.
