DUE WEST, S.C. - The Brevard College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Erskine College on Wednesday night at Huggins Field in non-conference action. With the loss, the Tornados fall to 2-1 while the Flying Fleet improve to 2-1.
BC was led by Sergi Monso, who picked up his third goal in as many games, which gives him the team lead with three. Robert Ferrer contributed with his third assist on the year which also leads the team. Heath Turner finished with seven saves in net in a losing effort.
Andrew Settlemire and Silvio Braun each scored a goal for Erskine. Fiore Costa turned away five Tornado shots to pick up the win.
BC looked to pick up an early lead just 44 seconds into the game but Ferrer's header was saved by Costa. That was the only chance the Tornados had before the Flying Fleet were able to strike for the first goal of the game. Settlemire intercepted a pass back to Turner and was able to find a wide open net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Gabriel Pastrana's shot in the 41st minute was the only other chance the Tornados had but his shot was turned away by Costa.
Turner did his part to keep his team in the game by turning away two shots by Ross Henderson, first at 54:06 and again at 57:17. The rebound of Henderson's second shot, however was picked up Braun and he found the back of the net to give Erskine a 2-0 lead at 57:23. The Tornados cut the lead in half as Monso beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to make the score 2-1 at 60:47.However, the Tornados were unable to capitalize on two late shots, the first by Jesse Omezi in the 89th minute and the second by Morgan Van Camp in the 90th minute, as both shots were turned away by Costa.
BC begins its South Atlantic Conference schedule in Hickory, North Carolina on Saturday to take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m.
