Tornados fall to Royals by final of 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Freshman outside hitter Callie Chappell (Rosman, N.C.) and senior middle hitter Savannah Cox (Kannapolis, N.C.) post a team-high 12 kills as the Brevard College Tornados (4-16, 3-10 SAC) fell by a final of 3-1 to the Queens University Royals (13-4, 10-2 SAC), Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.


In addition to Cox's 12 kills, the Kannapolis, N.C. native posted a .407 hitting percentage for the match, while Chappell contributed a .290 mark of her own from the outside. Junior outside hitter Rachle Ruble (Advance, N.C.) tallied a double-digit kill total of 11, posting a .242 hitting percentage in the effort.


Senior libero Aleksandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) recorded a game-high 26 digs, edging out Queen's Megan Mancini by one scoop for the top honor. Junior setter Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) posted 39 assists for the match, chipping in 12 digs of her own and three block assists.


With a four block assist effort, Cox currently sits at 173 block assists for her career, 10 shy of tying legendary blockers Jordei Osby and Jamie Atkinson, who both share the Brevard College career record for block assists with 183, apiece.


Brevard would come out swinging on the Royals to open the afternoon, hitting .250 for the opening set as the blue and white never trailed on their way to an opening frame 25-21 victory.
Queens evened the match at 1-1 following set two, as the two squads battled point-for-point up until a 10-10 tie, before the Royals benefitted from a 10-6 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Royals would close out the set by a final of 25-18 heading into the 10-minute set two intermission.


Following the intermission, Queens opened the third frame with a 13-9 run, as the Tornados would battle back to pull within two of the Royals at 20-18. Queens would capitalize on three kills and two Brevard mishaps to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.


In the final frame of the afternoon, Queens and Brevard would battle to a 13-13 tie, before the Royals would pull away 17-13, forcing the Tornados to battle back to even the contest at 20-20, benefitting from a nine kill outburst by Cox for the set. However, despite Cox's incredible effort, Queens would roll off a 5-1 run to end the match and take a 3-1 victory over the Tornados.


Brevard will look to get back to their winning ways this coming Tuesday, October 18, when they look to sweep the Lenior-Rhyne Bears for the first time in program history, as part of a three game home stand, first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Boshamer Gymnasium.
