WINGATE, N.C. - Junior guard Stevie Williams (High Point, N.C.) posted a game-high 22 points and three steals as the Brevard College Tornados (1-10, 0-6 SAC) fell by a final of 78-56 on the road to last season South Atlantic Conference tournament runner-up the Wingate University Bulldogs (4-7, 2-4 SAC).
In addition to Williams' 22-point outburst the High Point, N.C. native, finished 6-15 from the floor, going an impressive 9-10 from the free-throw line. Juniors Shelby Parris (Burlington, N.J.) and D.J. Bostick (Marietta, Ga.) and senior Harry Singh (Hanover Park, Ill.) each added six points for the game, while Parris lead the team with six rebounds for the afternoon.
On the opposite side of the ball, the Bulldogs posted three players with double-digit point totals behind a team-high 18 points by Keith Griffin. Mike Baez added a team-best six assists, while Zeriq Lolar contributed a game-high five assists.
Following a Griffin layup to open the scoring for Wingate, Brevard would get on the board off of a Singh layup. The Tornados managed to take the lead on their next possession as Bostick pulled down a defensive rebound, pushing the ball up the court to find Singh for the 4-2 go-ahead dunk.
The Tornados would lead by as many as four points with just over 12 minutes remaining in the opening frame as Singh sunk back-to-back free throws to give Brevard an 8-4 lead.
Wingate would use a 14-0 run, however to take an 18-8 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Parris would hit from deep at the 6:18 mark to pull the Tornados back to within seven points at 18-11 and Williams would add a pair of free throws to cut the Bulldogs' lead to five points.
The Bulldogs, however, would close out the opening half on a 16-9 run to take a 34-20 lead into the half.
Coming out of the break, Bostick would sink a three-point to trim Wingate's lead to 36-23 and senior Omar El Diraoui (Beirut, Lebanon) would find a streaking Williams for a layup to cut the lead to 11 points.
Throughout the remainder of the second half, the Tornados would manage to trim the Bulldogs' lead down to 13 points near the midway mark, but Wingate would find an answer on its following possession to increase its lead back up to 15.
The Bulldogs would use a 20-15 run over the first 10 minutes of play to take a 56-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Both teams would battle hard over the final portion with Wingate controlling a 22-21 scoring advantage over the final 10 minutes.
Brevard is set to return to Boshamer Gymnasium on Dec. 30, to host the North Greenville Crusaders at 4 p.m. to begin the second half portion of the 2016-17 schedule.
