BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Men's Soccer (3-3, 0-2) team played the inaugural game on the newly renovated artificial turf soccer field Saturday against the Coker Cobras (3-1-1, 2-0), falling late in second half action by a final of 3-2.
Coker opened the afternoons scoring 12 minutes into the first half as Aladdin Elfares collected a pass from Steffen Husum that gave the Cobras a quick 1-0 lead. Brevard would even the contest just before halftime as senior defenseman Caleb Hall (Brevard, N.C.) found the back of the net for the seniors first score of the year.
The Cobras would regain the lead seven minutes into second half play as Alvaro Urena powered home an unassisted score to give Coker a 2-1 edge. The Tornados would battle back to tie the contest at 2-2 in the 78th minute as senior midfielder Gabriel Pastrana (Concord, N.C) teamed up with fellow senior midfielder Winston Haddock (Mooresville, N.C.) following Coker going down a man at the 64:44 mark, as Jaedon Williamson was issued a red card.
Coker would add the final goal of the contest with three minutes remaining in the match as Christian Amtoft netted an unassisted score to give the Cobras a final 3-2 advantage.
Offensively, the Tornados were led by Gabriel Garcia (Vinhedo, Brazil) who collected three shot attempts, while Pastrana, Tyler Nelson (Hope Mills, N.C.), Brock Tuttle (Harrisburg, N.C.) and Ryan McPhillips (Glasgow, Scotland) each contributed a pair of shots apiece.
Brevard would end the contest with a 15-8 shot advantage as Coker keeper Michael Ritterbeck was forced to make a pair of saves in each half to help preserve the win.
In addition to the Tornados shot advantage, eight cards were handed out during the match as the Cobras collected four yellows and a disqualifying red, while Brevard was issued three yellow card miscues.
The Tornados will look to get back over .500 on the year as they travel to Anderson, S.C. September 21 for a conference matchup with the Anderson Trojans with action scheduled to get under way at 4:30 p.m.
