ANDERSON, S.C. - Senior midfielder Rhem Stubbs (Huntersville, N.C.) powers home the game winning goal in final minutes of Wednesday afternoons South Atlantic Conference showdown with the Anderson Trojans (3-3, 0-3 SAC), as the Brevard College Tornados (3-3, 1-2 SAC) claim their first conference win of the year by a final of 2-1.
"It is a fantastic win," said head men's soccer coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara. "All players believed and trusted in each other, which united our team" Shinohara continued. "This is a tremendous result for our team, we battled from behind and I congratulate all of our players as everyone contributed something special today."
The Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half of action as Brad Du Plooy played a short pass from teammate Johnny Landis in front of the Brevard goal that he powered past BC goalkeeper Heath Turner (Kansas City, Mo.) for the opening score.
Brevard would even the match at 1-1 just over 11 minutes into the second half as Alec Goettl (Concord, N.C.) fed a loose ball to teammate Cade McCurry (Huntersville, N.C.) who found the back of the net from three-yards out for his first career collegiate score.
The Tornados would tack on the game-winner just inside 10-minutes remaining in the contest as another Huntersville, N.C. native Stubbs collected a long pass from senior Camilo Sosa (Shelby, N.C.) that allowed the senior a shot from six-yards out, the he fired past Trojans keeper Devon Ashy for the 2-1 lead.
Brevard would finish the afternoon with a slight 12-10 shot advantage over the Trojans as the Tornados put five of 12 shots on frame, forcing Ashy to turn away three first half scoring attempts.
Offensively, Sosa, McCurry and senior Gabriel Pastrana (Concord, N.C.) led the Tornados with a pair of shot attempts apiece, while four other BC players got in on the action as well.
Turner played the entire 90 minutes in net for the blue and white surrendering just the first half score, while chipping in three saves on the afternoon to help preserve the Brevard win.
The Tornados will look to make it two straight in conference play this weekend as they play host to the Mars Hill Lions at 2 p.m., as a Brevard win would put the team at 2-2 overall in conference play.
