Lions Turn Back Brevard In Tennis Action

BREVARD, N.C. – The doubles tandem of Mekenzie Bowman and Margaret Correll recorded a victory over Mattie Wood and Maureen Truett to provide the Brevard women's tennis team with a point against Piedmont, who emerged with an 8-1 win at the Brevard Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.

Bowman and Correll briefly knotted the match at 1-1 after teammates Kelsey Kushner and Jen Cox suffered an 8-1 setback to Kara Landsiedel and Crysalin Gloria. Piedmont closed out the doubles session with an 8-2 victory by Lilly McNeel and Megan McKay who downed the tandem of Hannah Spear and Carmen Boone.

McKay followed that victory with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph in the fifth-seeded battle with Boone. Truett then moved the Lions' lead to 4-1 by battling past Cox 6-1, 6-2. McNeel secured the win for Piedmont with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Spear in the clash of six seeds.

Wood picked up her first victory of the afternoon against Bowman by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Piedmont made for a 7-1 lead when Gloria grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win against Correll. The match closed with Landsiedel overcoming Kushner 6-3, 6-1.

The Piedmont College men's tennis team was clicking on all cylinders in its 9-0 victory over Brevard on Tuesday.

The Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles action. The match opened with an 8-1 win by Andrew Chitty and Harrison LaBollita who downed Florian Peyssonneaux and Jaume Reig. The tandem of Alex Tomlin and Sam Niebanck handed Will Christiansen and David Bumgarner an 8-3 loss before Nathan Metzger and Jackson Hill teamed up to down Tom Mittring and Tim Hengst 8-4.

LaBollita grabbed his second win of the day in singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Peyssonneaux. Niebanck followed with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Bumgarner and Tomlin added a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Reig.

With the team victory secured, Metzger added a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mittring in the battle of first seeds. Hengst grabbed an opening set win, but Hill emerged with a three-set win by scores of 1-6, 6-2, 10-5. Kanler Cumbass completed the Lions' sweep by a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Christiansen.

The men's team makes their return to the court on March 3 when it heads to Huntingdon. The women next play against Johnson C. Smith on March 10.
