Tornados Complete 19-2 Win Over Huntingdon

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard women's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back as it closed out the home portion of its 2018 schedule with a decisive 19-2 victory over visiting Huntingdon at Ives-Lemel Field on Saturday afternoon.

The game served as Senior Day for Brevard's Shelby Arsenault, Penina Fungalei, Victoria Hayes, Kelly Kearnan and Nina Siu.

Offensively, Brevard received multi-goal performances from Siu (five), Kearnan (four), Micaiah Vacchiano (three), Hayes (three) and Kaylee McRae (two). On defense, the Tornados received five ground balls from Hayes and Kearnan, while Arsenault made two saves.

Siu and Kearnan tallied two goals each inside the first 10 minutes of the game to provide Brevard (6-7) with a 4-0 advantage at the 20:14 mark. Huntingdon (2-12) retaliated with a goal from Shelby Martin, who drove home a pass from Madison Rackley to make for a three-goal difference.

Siu got the Brevard offense back on track when she found an open Vacchiano for the fifth Tornado goal of the game. Jezika Gunter added a free position shot goal, making for a 6-1 advantage, before seniors Siu and Hayes got together for the seventh Brevard strike.

McRae got into the act with a goal at the 12:50 mark, extending the Brevard lead to 8-1. Hayes tallied her first goal of the game just over a minute later and Kelly Wilkins put the Tornados into double figures with an unassisted goal at the 10:30 mark.

Kearnan found the back of the net for the third time in the first half on a power play goal, following a yellow card for a shot to the head on Hayes. McRae extended the Brevard lead to 12-1 with her second goal of the afternoon and Vacchiano closed out the first half with a score with 1:04 remaining to make for a 13-1 lead at the intermission.

Just over three minutes into the second half Siu tallied the 14th Tornado goal of the game, quickly followed by Vacchiano's third goal of the contest at the 25:58 mark.

Kearnan used a free position shot to notch her fourth goal of the game, moving the Tornado advantage to 16-1. Hayes tallied the next two goals for the Tornados, making for an 18-1 lead with 13:56 remaining, but Huntingdon tacked on a late second half goal to halt a 14-goal stretch by the Tornados.

Siu drove home the final goal of the game at the 2:18 mark, moving Brevard to 5-3 at home on the season.

Brevard closes out the 2018 campaign on Sunday when it heads to Ferrum for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Panthers. A Tornado victory would mark the second time in program history that the team has at least a .500 record or better.
