Pacers Sweep Tornados in Conference Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARY, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team (20-14, 10-7 USA South) fell in both games of a USA South Conference doubleheader to William Peace University (18-17, 10-7 USAS) on Sunday afternoon in Cary, North Carolina at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

WPU used a three-run fifth inning and held off the Tornados down the stretch for a 4-2 victory in game one. The Pacers scored five unanswered runs in game two to pull away for a 9-5 win and clinch the series win.

GAME ONE - WILLIAM PEACE 4, BREVARD 2

Trenten Anderson (4-5) pitched the distance in the close loss for the Tornados, throwing eight innings allowing nine hits and four runs with seven strikeouts.

Logan Clark notched a double in a 2-for-4 performance, while Davis Bryson drove in both of BC's runs in the game and also hit a double. Frankie Vasquez hit a double and drew a walk, while Zach Allison and Lucas Granata logged singles.

Patrick Rogan and Hunter Ward each had multi-hit performances for the Pacers. Philip Berger (4-4) earned the victory with a seven-inning outing with seven hits, two runs, and seven Ks, as Peyton Howard earned his fourth save of the season with two shutout innings and four strikeouts.

Bryson put the Tornados on the board first with a bunt single with two outs that scored Granata. The Pacers got the bases loaded with two outs but were unable to capitalize.

Both sides traded scoreless frames in the third inning. William Peace brought the tying run around in the fourth innings before breaking through in the bottom of the fifth with two RBI doubles and an RBI single to take a 41 lead. The Tornados put runners at second and third with one away, but Berger forced a strikeout and a flyout to halt the threat.

After Tristian Robinson drew a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, Bryson roped an RBI double down the left-field line to cut the Pacer lead down, to 4-2. BC had runners on the corners in the frame with one away, but an inning-ending double play kept the Pacers on top.

Vasquez made it to second base in the top of the eighth after a one-out walk and a wild pitch, but the Tornados were unable to bring him around to score.

Three-consecutive strikeouts gave the Pacers victory in the top of the ninth, as William Peace clinched game one of the three-game series.

GAME TWO - WILLIAM PEACE 9, BREVARD 5

Clark and Vasquez each logged two hits apiece, with Clark and Hayden Jennings notching doubles. Peter Fumero launched a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the fifth as part of a four-RBI performance from the senior outfielder from Miami, Florida.

Jacob Thompson pitched six innings for the Tornados with five runs allowed and two strikeouts. Jacob Frizzell (1-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering three runs in the seventh inning, while Noah Webb also made an appearance in relief.

Brett Kemp went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead a Pacer offense that totaled nine runs on 16 hits and eight extra-base knocks.

Brevard got on the board first with a pair of two-out bases-loaded walks in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Pacers answered that up, however, with a three-run first inning of their own to take a one-run edge, 3-2.

WPU's Seth Roseborough hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to a 4-2 margin. Fumero connected with a three-run home run to left field in the top of the fifth as Brevard regained the advantage, 5-4.

WPU tied things up with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth before using a three-run seventh frame to retake the lead, 8-5. A fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the eighth gave the Pacers a four-run edge, and the hosts clinched the doubleheader sweep victory, 9-5.
