Barker Wins 800 Meters in Salem on Busy Weekend for BC Indoor Track & Field

Tornados Competed at Two Sites on Saturday

SALEM, Va. – The Brevard College Track and Field team competed in two indoor events over the weekend with action at both the Bast-Cregger Multi Invitational hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia and the East Coast Elite event at the Tryon Equestrian Center in Tryon, North Carolina.
 
Graduate student Channing Barker won the Women's 800 meters and placed third in the Women's 1000 meters to lead the Brevard College Indoor Track and Field team on Friday and Saturday at the Bast-Cregger Multi Invitational.
 
Other highlights in Salem included Noah Westbrook cracking the NCAA DIII top-100 with a 14.43-meter throw in the shot put, Jaxsen Wilkerson turning heads in the Heptathlon, and Haylea-Layne Miller competing in the Pentathlon.
 
The weekend began with competition on Friday at the Bast-Cregger Multi Invitational with graduate student Channing Barker (3:04.19) leading the Tornados with a third-place finish in the Women's 1000 meters.  
 
Madison Hendrix-Rhodes (32nd), Victoria Sylvester (33rd) and Carleigh Garrett (34th) also represented Brevard in the 1000 meters.
 
Brevard senior Haylea-Layne Miller competed in the Pentathlon with the 60-meter hurdles and the 800 meters on Friday.  
 
Miller put together a strong top-ten finish, placing eighth with a time of 2:49.43 in the 800.  In the field events of the pentathlon, Miller competed in the High Jump, Long Jump and Shot Put.   
 
On the men's side, Jaxsen Wilkerson competed in the Heptathlon, beginning his quest on the track with a 13th place result (7.61) in the 60-meter dash.  Wilkerson followed with a fifth-place finish (9.17) in the 60-meter hurdles and a 13th-place result in the 1000 meters.  He placed third in the Long Jump (6.44 meters) and fifth in the Shot Put (10.07 meters).  He rounded out his all-around performance with a fifth-place result in the High Jump and an 11th-place result in the Pole Vault.
 
Owen Plucar (2:46.82) led BC with a 14th-place result in the 1000 meters.  Colbin Hill (2:50.29) placed 17th and Adin DeJesus (2:56.73) 23rd to follow Plucar.  
 
In the Men's 5000 meters, teammates Ethan Carlan (17:37.14) and Shea Granger (17:45.69) placed in 18th and 19th position respectively in the final race of the day.  The men's 500-meter race also took place on Friday with BC's Seth Robinson finishing 27th with a time of 1:20.86.
 
The action continued on Saturday in Salem with Barker busting out with a time of 2:21.65 to win the Women's 800 meters.  
 
The native of Belmont, Tennessee won the race by just over one second to edge unattached runner Courtney Drumm and top a large field of 83 runners in the event.  
 
Serenity Jordan (1:05.96) placed 17th in the Women's 400 meters with Miller (33rd) also competing in the 400.  Garrett (82nd) raced in the 800 meters as well.    Imani Singleton (28.56) placed 41st in the Women's 200 meters.  Singleton finished 18th (9.56 meters) in the Triple Jump and competed in Long Jump, placing 27th with a leap of 4.61 meters.
 
The team of Jordan. Miller, Hendrix-Rhodes and Barker raced in the Women's 4x400 meter relay as the Tornados finished eighth with a combined time of 4:39.72.  Plucar, DeJesus, Robinson and Jeffrey McDougald led BC to 10th place in the men's 4x400.
 
Hill returned to the track with a 22nd place result (4:49.24) in the Men's 1 Mile run with Carlan (41st) also racing.  Plucar raced in the 400 meters on Saturday, placing 30th.  
 
Later in the day, DeJesus (41st) and Granger (42nd) finished side-by-side in the Men's 800 meters.  McDougald also raced on Saturday, competing in the 200 meters.
 
Westbrook was BC's top men's performer in throws with his seventh lace result in shot put that registered as the 98th best throw of the season in NCAA DIII, while Antonio King delivered an 11th-place throw of 13.66 meters.  Cameron Eubanks (12.72 meters) also represented with a 19th place finish in shot put.  
 
Henry Tarte led BC in the Men's Weight Throw with a mark of 13.50 meters, good for 14th place.  King (34th, 11.35 meters) also competed in the weighted throw.  
 
In women's throws, Kinsley Burris-Whitesides placed 17th with a 12.20-meter effort in the weighted throw.  Burris-Whitesides also placed 35th in the shot put.
 
A smaller group of Tornado athletes headed southeast to the Tryon Equestrian Center for Saturday's East Coast Elite event.  
 
Donningtun Walters placed second in an abbreviated field in the Men's Weight Throw with an effort of 11.00 meters.  Walters also placed seventh in shot put.  
 
On the women's side, KJ Henderson placed sixth in the Women's Shot Put with a toss of 8.73 meters.  Abbey Waldrop also represented BC in the shot put, placing 11th. Waldrop also saw action in the Long Jump.  
 
The BC Track & Field team will now set its sights on its next meet in Roanoke, Virginia on Saturday, February 15.
