Juan Mascaro Sr. Named Technical Director; Juan Mascaro Jr. Elevated to Head Coach of BC Women’s Soccer

BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard College alumnus Juan Mascaro Jr. has been named Head Coach of the BC women's soccer program, effective immediately, announced Associate Vice President for Athletics Dr. Myranda Crews.

"Promoting Juan Jr. to head coach is both a celebration of our program's legacy and a confident step forward," stated Associate Vice President of Athletics Dr. Myranda Crews. "As a program, we've experienced extraordinary success with back-to-back championships, and Juan Jr. has been an integral part of building that standard every step of the way. Having known Juan Jr. since his time as a student-athlete here, I've watched him grow into a coach and leader who embodies everything this program represents. To see him now step into this role is incredibly meaningful and speaks to the culture, continuity, and family that define our women's soccer program. Juan Jr. understands what it takes to sustain excellence, and I have complete confidence in his ability to lead our student-athletes with integrity, care, and a relentless commitment to winning."

"Watching Juan Jr. grow into the head coach of this program has been one of the greatest honors of my life," added Juan Mascaro Sr. "Coaching alongside him and building a championship team together has been incredibly special, not just because of the wins, but because of the way he leads, connects, and genuinely cares about our student-athletes. Juan Jr. understands this program at its core, and he has earned the trust and respect of everyone around him. I'm proud of the coach he is today and even more excited about the leader he will continue to become. Being able to continue working together in our new roles allows us to keep building, keep teaching, and keep chasing excellence for this program we both love so deeply."

Coach Mascaro Sr., who recently concluded his 10th season at the helm of BC women's soccer and 17th overall year as a head coach at Brevard following back-to-back seasons as USA South Coach of the Year, will now transition to Technical Director of the program - a coaching shift in line with the professional soccer model.

"Juan Sr.'s impact on our women's soccer program is immeasurable," commented Dr. Crews. "His leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to excellence have shaped this program into a championship standard, on and off the field. The success we celebrate today is a direct reflection of the foundation he has built and the culture he sustained over time. Moving into the role of Technical Director allows Juan Sr. to continue influencing the program at the highest level, mentoring coaches, shaping long-term strategy, and ensuring the legacy that he created continues to thrive. We are deeply grateful for his service as Head Coach and incredibly fortunate that his knowledge, passion, and leadership will remain central to the future of our program."

Mascaro Jr., a 2016 graduate of BC, served for four seasons as Associate Head Coach of BC women's soccer. Before joining BCWS, Mascaro Jr. was Assistant Coach with BC men's soccer, and also served as an Assistant Coach at Emory & Henry.

"I'm thrilled to continue on this journey with Brevard College Women's Soccer in this new role," said Head Coach Mascaro Jr. "I'd like to thank President Bradley J Andrews, Dr. Crews, and Coach Mascaro Sr. for trusting in me and giving me this incredible opportunity."

Mascaro Sr. and Mascaro Jr. have led Tornado women's soccer to unprecedented success in recent seasons. The 2025 campaign resulted in the program's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament, after the Tornados earned their second-straight USA South Conference Regular Season Championship and secured the program's first-ever USA South Conference Tournament Title. Brevard went through the regular season without suffering a single defeat or tie, going 16-0-0, and finished the 2025 campaign with an 18-1-1 overall record.

BC completed consecutive unbeaten regular seasons, and in 2025, finished off its first regular season without a loss or a tie since the 1996 and 1997 NJCAA National Championship BC women's soccer teams. Brevard garnered the program's highest-ever finish in the NCAA NPI rankings at 34th, with the Tornados topping the tabulations at 30th this season. BC also appeared in the NCAA Region VI and the United Soccer Coaches DIII Region VI rankings for the first time in school history.

Plenty of USA South Conference honors were bestowed on the Tornados in 2025. Mikayla Zvekan was selected as BC women's soccer's first-ever USA South Player of the Year, while Abby Nunez collected Goalkeeper of the Year honors for the second-straight season.

USA South All-Conference accolades were also doled out in plenty. Zvekan and Nunez were placed on the All-Conference First Team, joined by Mikaela Edwards and Mikayla Rubin. Kinlee Mozley, Kiara Porcelli, and MK Smoak all earned All-Conference Second Team accolades. During the regular season, Nunez secured Defender of the Week honors three times, Zvekan was selected as Player of the Week twice, and Mozley was also voted as Player of the Week. Zvekan was honored by TopDrawerSoccer.com with National Player of the Week honors as well.

Brevard closed out the regular season and conference postseason top-five nationally in several team statistical categories, including goals-against average (second, 0.208), won-lost-tied percentage (second, 0.974), assists per game (second, 3.63), save percentage (second, 0.935), shots per game (third, 25.58), points per game (fourth, 11.53), and shutout percentage (fourth, 0.789).

In 2024, the Tornados claimed the program's first-ever USA South Conference Regular Season Championship - the first conference regular-season title in the NCAA-era for any sport at BC - and finished the season with an unbeaten 15-0-3 record, the first time BC women's soccer has completed an undefeated campaign since the school was a junior college in 1998. Brevard boasted the conference's Rookie of the Year (Mozley) and Goalkeeper of the Year (Nunez), alongside seven All-Conference performers

The Tornados earned the program's first NCAA-era postseason win in the semifinals of the 2023 USA South Conference Women's Soccer Tournament, where the Tornados reached the Championship match for the first time.

BC women's soccer has enjoyed sustained success since joining the NCAA Division III ranks, qualifying for postseason action in seven of the last eight seasons. The run started for Brevard in 2018 when the Tornados won 11 matches en route to a berth into the 2018 ECAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. The Tornados then qualified for the COVID-shortened Spring 2021 postseason with a spot in the USA South West Division Tournament, followed by five-straight trips to the USA South Conference Tournament from 2021-25, with the Tornados earning the top overall seed in both the 2024 and 2025 campaigns.

Mascaro Jr. is a graduate of Brevard College with a Bachelor's degree in Business and Organizational Leadership, to go along with a Master's degree in Sports Management from Georgia Southern University.  He holds a United States Federation C level coaching license, a National Goalkeeper certification, and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and United Soccer Coaches.

Now shifting to the role of Technical Director of BC women's soccer, Mascaro Sr. also serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Brevard College. Mascaro Sr. earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration in 1997 and his Master of Arts in Applied Economics in 1999 from the University of Central Florida.

BC women's soccer will begin offseason practice in Spring 2026, as the Tornados set out to defend both their USA South Regular Season and Tournament crowns next fall. Stay tuned to BCTornados.com for updates surrounding the 2026 women's soccer season.
