BREVARD, N.C. - Aleksandra Vrvilo broke Rebecca Schoonover's NCAA-era career digs record in Brevard's four-set loss to Lincoln Memorial on Friday night, becoming the first Tornados' player to surpass 1,350 career digs since the program attained Division II status in 2008.
The junior libero broke the record with her 13th dig of the match that came as part of a Herculean effort in the second set. Vrvilo accumulated 14 digs in the set on her way to 39 on the evening, tying her own program record for a single match that she attained in a 2013 match at Newberry and last month's tilt with the same Lincoln Memorial (9-8, 6-5 SAC) team.
She now has 1,377 digs in her illustrious career and is also Brevard's (8-10, 5-7 SAC) NCAA-era career leader with 5.20 digs per set. She became the second Tornado to break a major milestone this season, as Fatima Gharachorloo became Brevard's NCAA-era kills leader in an early September matchup with then-No. 25 Armstrong State. Gharachorloo needs 33 more kills to become the first Brevard player to top 1,000 in a career.
Vrvilo's record-setting night and a standout performance from Savannah Cox were not enough to lift the Tornados to a victory over the Lady Railsplitters, however. Brevard evened the score by holding on for a 26-24 win in the second set, using a block by Cox and Whitney DeMoss and a Kindle Kirkham kill to break a 24-all deadlock after the Lady Railsplitters had erased a three-point deficit.
But Lincoln Memorial seized control of the match in the third set, racing out to a five-point lead with a 7-2 run that followed a 15-15 tie. The Tornados closed the gap to as few as two points on two occasions, but the visitors held on for a 25-22 win.
Brevard struggled to gain control of the fourth and final set, falling behind 12-8 before rallying to tie the score at 14. Four consecutive points by the Lady Railsplitters upped their advantage to six late in the set, and the Tornados were unable to muster a run to force a fifth frame in a 25-19 defeat.
Cox played extremely well for Brevard, hitting .348 on 23 attempts with nine kills and a single error. She also notched a service ace and had five blocks on the evening. Bri Vargas set a career high with 19 digs and was one of five Tornados to finish in double figures. Erin Barr notched her 12th double-double of the season with 10 digs and 46 assists, one off the match high set by Lincoln Memorial's Abby Cash.
Brooke Fleeman paced the Lady Railsplitters with a match-high 13 digs, followed closely by Casey Mense with 11 and Danielle Ged with 10. Lincoln Memorial totaled 12.0 team blocks on the evening, led by seven from Jazzy Oates.
Brevard returns to action tomorrow in a conference match with Carson-Newman. First serve is scheduled for noon.
