BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados (4-17, 3-11 SAC) fell to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (7-13, 5-8 SAC) by a final of 3-0, Tuesday evening in Brevard, N.C.
Senior middle hitter Savannah Cox (Kannaoplis, N.C.) led the Tornados offensively as the senior racked up a game-high 13 kills, hitting .375 for the game. Junior middle hitter Stephanie Lambert (Florence, Ky.) recorded another solid performance for the blue and white, posting 11 kills for the match, while freshman Callie Chappell (Rosman, N.C.) recorded seven kills in the effort.
Junior setter Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) contributed a game-high 36 assists, while pitching in nine digs. Senior Libero Aleksandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) scooped up a game-high 21 digs, while junior Maggie Weiss (Clemmons, N.C.) recorded nine digs.
Cox posted two block assists for the contest, as the Kannapolis, N.C. native needs eight block assists to tie the all-time Brevard College record.
Lenoir-Rhyne would take the opening set of the evening by a final of 25-19, as the Bears used a 5-0 run to close out the opening set.
The Bears opened the second frame of the evening on a 7-4 run, before the Tornados were able to battle back into the match at 13-12, benefitting from three kills by junior Rachel Ruble (Advance, N.C.). However, Lenoir-Rhyne used a 12-6 run to take the second set 25-18.
The Tornados would not go quietly on the evening, battling the Bears point-for-point to open the third set 7-7. Lenoir-Rhyne used a 6-2 run to jump out on Brevard 13-9, before a kill by Lambert, block by Cox and Hannah Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.), service ace by Lambert, ball handling error by the Bears Jessica Runk and a kill by Cox gave the Tornados the lead at 14-13. Lambert would add two more service aces late in the set to tie the game at 23-23 before the Bears took the set by a final of 25-23.
Brevard will look to make up ground in the South Atlantic Conference this coming weekend as they host Tusculum, October 21, followed by Mars Hill, October 22.
