NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team (5-19, 4-13 SAC) dropped a 3-0 decision to the Newberry College Wolves (15-10, 12-5 SAC) in the front end of South Atlantic Conference road weekend.
Offensively, the Tornados were paced by freshman Callie Chappell (Rosman, N.C.) who finished with a game-high 10 kills, hitting .556 for the match. Junior Hannah Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.) posted seven kills for the contest, while senior middle hitter Savannah Cox (Kannaopolis, N.C.) and junior middle hitter Stephanie Lambert (Florence, Ky.) each tallied five kills, as both middle hitters finished hitting over .200 for the contest.
Additionally, Cox tallied one of Brevard's only block assists as the senior is now four shy of tying the all-time career record for block assists.
Junior setter Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) posted 26 assists for the match, leading the Tornados with 10 digs and contributing with Cox the Tornados only block for the contest. While senior libero Aleksandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) and Maggie Weiss (Clemmons, N.C.) each finished with nine scoops apiece.
Brevard opened the first set of the night on a 6-3 run, before the Wolves battled back to even the opening frame at 8-8. Newberry would close out the opening set on a 17-6 run to take an opening 1-0 lead.
In the second frame of the night, the Wolves would open 7-4 as the Tornados evened the match at 7-7, before both squads would swap leads up until a 23-23 tie. However, back-to-back kills by Madison DarbyMcClure gave Newberry a 25-23 set point and a 2-0 advantage.
The final set of the night would belong to the Wolves, as Newberry jumped out to an 8-4 lead, never trailing the entire set on their way to a 25-17 set win and the 3-0 match victory.
Brevard will look to make up ground tomorrow afternoon as they prepare for their final showdown with the Anderson Trojans at 2 p.m. from the Palmetto State.
