MARS HILL, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team (3-6, 3-2 SAC) got back into the win column Saturday afternoon in Mars Hill, N.C. pulling off a 3-2 win over the Mars Hill Lions (1-6, 0-4 SAC), as four Tornados finished the afternoon with double digit kill totals.
Freshman Callie Chappell (Rosman, N.C.) returned to her aggressive form Saturday following a down evening in Tusculum to lead the Tornados with 17 kills, while junior Rachel Ruble (Advance, N.C.) contributed 16 kills of her own. Additionally, junior Hannah Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.) and senior Savannah Cox (Kannapolis, N.C.) racked up double digit kills as the pair finished with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Junior setter Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) added to her all-time Brevard College assist total with another dominating performance, racking up 54 assists in the win to go along with 16 digs and three blocking assists. Senior Alekandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) scooped up a game high 30 digs, while Chappell and junior Maggie Weiss (Clemmons, N.C) also recorded double digit dig totals.
Both Cox and Elmore would finish over the .200 mark in hitting percentage as their performances helped the Tornados turn in game high .273 hitting percentage in the second frame, while also hitting .244 as a team in the third set.
The Tornados would roll off two consecutive 25-22 set victories to open the afternoon before Mars Hill would edge out Brevard 25-23 in the third set as the Tornados trailed 20-15 before eight Brevard kills would put coach Anna Wagner's squad one point away from tying the match at 24 all. However, the Lions would capitalize on a Ruble attack error to win the third point.
Mars Hill would take the fourth set of the afternoon jumping out to a 21-12 lead before eventually claiming a 25-17 final.
The Tornados would get back on track after dropping two straight sets battling the Lions to an 11-11 tie in the final frame before a Kill by Chappell, two Mars Hill attack errors and the game winning strike by Ruble would help Brevard prevail to over .500 in the conference.
Brevard will look to carry winning momentum into this coming weekend as they host a pair of conference tilts with Newberry, September 23 at 7 p.m. and Anderson September 24 at 2 p.m.
