HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Brevard College Tornados Volleyball team (3-10, 3-5 SAC) dropped the opener of a three game weekend series, Friday evening in Hartsville, S.C., as the Coker College Cobras (8-6, 2-6 SAC) defeated the Tornados in three straight sets to earn the 3-0 South Atlantic Conference victory.
Freshman Callie Chappell (Rosman, N.C.) led the Tornados attack against the Cobras, as the true freshman recorded an even 10 kills and 10 digs for the match. Junior Hannah Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.) finished behind Chappell with nine kills, while Savannah Cox (Kannapolis, N.C.) and Stephanie Lambert (Florence, Ky.) each contributed five kills apiece.
Senior libero Aleksandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) turned in a traditional dominant performance for the Tornados backline, as the all-time Brevard College digs leader racked up another game high 28 scoops for the contest. Junior setter Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) recorded a game high 21 assists, while also finished the match as one of three BC players to record double digit digs with 11.
Coker opened the contest with a 25-17 first set triumph, as Brevard pushed the Cobras point-for-point, reaching a 12-12 tie before Coker managed to roll off a 13-5 run to close out the opening frame.
In the second set, the Cobras jumped out to a 13-8 lead, before the Tornados battled back to take a 21-17 lead. Coker recorded six straight points, however, to take a 23-21 edge and the eventual 25-23 set point and 2-0 match lead.
The Tornados did not go quietly on the evening as the third set of the night proved to be a battle from the beginning. Both teams swapping leads, as BC leaded 8-5 to open the third frame, while the Cobras lead 22-17 in the final points of the set. Brevard would pull within two points of Coker at 24-22, however, Cobras Madison Bingle would record her game-high 13 kill of the match for the final point of the evening.
Brevard will look to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon from Wingate, N.C. as they face off with perennial volleyball powerhouses the Wingate Bulldogs at noon, followed by a meeting with nationally ranked Wheeling Jesuit at 2 p.m.
