BREVARD, N.C. - Boshamer Gymnasium was rocking Thursday evening in Brevard, N.C. as the Tornados women's volleyball team opened 2016 South Atlantic Conference action against the Queens Royals as the Royals would battle back from down 2-1 to force a deciding game five and the eventual 3-2 win.
For the second straight game freshman Callie Chappell (Rosman, N.C.) led the Tornados attack with 17 kills, while junior Rachel Ruble (Advance, N.C.) and senior Savannah Cox (Kannapolis, N.C.) powered home 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Junior Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) would finish with a match high 43 assists, putting the setter 22 assists away from passing Bethany Stevenson for first-place on the Brevard College all-time career assist list.
Senior Aleksandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) finished with a game high tie with Royals Megan Mancini with 15 digs, while Chappell, Barr and Bri Vargas (Maryville, Tenn.) all netted over five scoops apiece on the evening.
Brevard would open the evening with a 26-24 first set victory before dropping the second set 25-13. The Tornados would come out of the 10-minute second set intermission on a mission, however, never trailing the entire third set to take a 25-22 set point and a 2-1 match advantage.
Queens would even the contest at 2-2 following the fourth game, as the Royals took a 25-18 set point forcing a deciding fifth set, where Queens capped off the conference opener with a 15-10 winning set.
Brevard will look to bounce back tomorrow evening as they face off with the Catawba College Indians from Boshamer Gymnasium with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
